In accordance with Article 24 of the Senate Principles on Graduate Education and Training Regulations, the following requirements must be met in order to enroll in courses as a special student:
- The applicant must be a currently enrolled student at a higher education institution other than Istanbul Technical University (ITU),
- The applicant must have completed at least one semester in their current program and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 out of 4.00,
- For courses taught in English, the applicant must present a valid score from one of the English proficiency exams recognized by ITU.
Application Timeline and Procedure
Candidates wishing to take courses at ITU under special student status in the Summer semester of the 2024-2025 Academic Year must submit the documents listed below to the ITU Registrar’s Office via email (ayahsi@itu.edu.tr) with the subject line “Special Student Application” between June 30, 2025 and July 2, 2025. Applications submitted outside this period will not be considered.
Required Documents
- Special Student Application Form (in Turkish or English)
- The form must be filled out electronically.
- The form can be signed with electronic signatures in PDF format.
- Incomplete or unsigned forms will not be processed.
- Certificate of Enrollment
- Must be obtained within the last two weeks.
- E-Devlet üzerinden temin edilen belgeler kabul edilir.
- Official Transcript
- Must be obtained within the last two weeks.
- Photocopy of passport
- Proof of Foreign Language Proficiency
- Accepted exams and minimum passing scores for English-taught courses at ITU can be found here.
- Students who do not meet the language requirement are not allowed to enroll in English-taught courses.
- Official Letter of Approval from the Home Institution
- This must be an official letter including the approval of the relevant graduate school board, confirming that the student is permitted to take courses at ITU.

Important Notes:
- No tuition or fees are charged under the special student status.
- Course schedules must not conflict; courses with schedule overlaps will not be registered in the system.
- ITU students are not eligible to apply under special student status.
- Students enrolled under this status can obtain official transcripts documenting their academic performance at the end of the semester.
- As each university may have its own regulations concerning special student status, applicants are strongly advised to remain in contact with their home institution and follow the necessary procedures accordingly.
- Upon the completion of the semester and entry of final grades into the system, the student’s academic performance will be officially communicated by the ITU Graduate School to the student’s home university. If any required document is missing, course registration cannot be finalized.
